As a part of the 2019 Canyon Rim Cares Day of Service, Comcast and Canyon Rim residents partnered to provide over 30 low-income families with both a brand new laptop and a free internet connection through Comcast’s Internet Essentials program. While Comcast donated over 30 laptops to the cause, Canyon Rim residents donated over $3,000 to subsidize internet connections for qualifying families.
“The pandemic has exacerbated the need for digital equity given that so many more students are needing adequate technology and connectivity to keep up with their educational endeavors,” said Nate Gibby, chairman of Canyon Rim is Community. “Both Comcast and Canyon Rim residents are not only aware of the problem, but have been very generous in their efforts to ameliorate it. Magic happens with corporations and residents come together to improve their communities.”
“Together, we have been able to connect 160,000 low-income Utahns to the power of affordable Internet at home and to the endless opportunity, education, growth, and discovery it provides,” said Deneiva Knight, external affairs director at Comcast. “Partnering with Millcreek City and Canyon Rim Cares allows us to support the tools, resources, and abilities that folks need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.”
Over the next 10 years, Comcast is committing $1 billion to connect 50 million people from low-income families with the tools and resources they need to succeed in a digital world. Locally, Comcast will connect Utah families to the Internet at home, equipping safe spaces with free WiFi, and working with Utah’s network of nonprofit community organizations, city leaders, and business partners/clients to create opportunities for low-income Utahns.
As a part of this announcement, Comcast is expanding its efforts to help Utahns gain access to the Internet and close the digital divide. Since 2011, Comcast has connected more than 160,000 low-income Utahns to a home internet connection – many for the first time through their Internet Essentials program. We’re proud to be a partner in this effort alongside many other organizations throughout Utah.
